How I Got 8.5 Bands in IELTS ? A Must Read Article

Hi got my results today-IELTS (first attempt)

Was a silent lurker on this group, benefited a lot ! Will be happy to help πŸ™‚

Since a lot of people were asking about my preparation and strategy-

I only prepared for like 2 days.
Cambridge IELTS books 11 and 12- ended up doing only 12 though.

Listening - It was fairly easy for me practiced 4-8 listening papers both 11 and 12. Strategy- listened very carefully wrote down every related part of listening in the question sheet and double checked, the questions arent fairly simple based on listening- they kinda twist it a little bit

Reading- Again same prep like listening, strategy- read questions first and then read the passage, underlined related parts of the passage. It is easy unless the passage is regarding a very boring topic, i had one which was very blah and uninteresting i figure thats why i got 8.5 as opposed to 9. Oh well !!

Writing- I dint write much since high school, you know with grammar and planned writing. Figured its too time consuming to plan for more than 8 band and I wasn't sure if i wanted to do that. I read few of the Ryan's band 9 essays and another book (SIMON) i found here that helped me form rough drafts. Pay attention to grammar and let your thoughts flow. Dont overwrite and make sure to be expressive, to the point and find time to review the essays. My attempt at grammar was carefully reading the essays from my reading and noticing where they used commas and such.Basically i added commas to my usual writing!

Speaking- It is basically breeze. Dont worry about not knowing what to talk, its like a casual conversation with a new friend who is trying to know you. watched a YouTube video on mock speaking, thought i was better then the person who spoke on the video and dint actually prepare πŸ˜‰ If you are not good at English- talk slowly (not awfully slowly that would make your examiner impatient) so your thoughts will line up with what you speak. Try not to use fancy words you never use, stick to your basic use of vocabulary and may be add in few exquisite words like EXQUISITE πŸ˜›

GOOD LUCK πŸ™‚
Its a very easy one that tests your English, be confident.
